I think a lot of designers have an inbred hatred for Arial and Times New Roman, if only because of gross overuse: they've been included on almost every personal computer since the 1980s. So, if someone uses Arial in a publication, they might as well be shouting, "Hey, I know next to nothing about fonts! Just like everyone else!"
Maybe this typeface elitism is just our way of pretending we're better than everybody else. Still, I use Vera Serif in my school papers and Hiragino Kaku Gothic over here. [Edit: Not anymore! It's Gotham now!]
